A legend of the Flats

As you of the early years of the modern day, you can remember certain persons who helped you the path of your fishing trip. I guess you could “mentor” or “teacher” but whatever you want to label it, we all know someone who might say that title. At the beginning of my kayak fishing adventure, lucky enough to have someone who individuals. While running covered a range of crab with a lone junky rod stabbing meet up from my milk crate I was along a paddler came sporting a t-shirt with cut off sleeves 14 yellow kayak with a matching yellow box with just a few bars … that was it. I thought to myself, “Here comes another new kayak fisherman like myself.” After a brief conversation with the speckled trout guru, I immediately realized that Forrest Short was not a rookie!

Since that day, hundreds of hours were spent on the flats trout chasing the beautiful sea. During that time I have reached out to Forrest for advice on many different occasions. After each SMS and e-mail I would walk with a little more “mojo” than I did before hand, knowing that the advice I got was as a sacred treasure.

Recently, with the weather and the kitchen will work in unison, Joe Underwood and I were able to meet up with Forrest for a pre-cold front condominiums attack. To be honest, I do not know what I was more excited … connect with some nice trout or share the water with a guy I highly respected.

Would you sleep know, Forrest was the first to strike with a nice 25 “citation speckled trout before the sun even came out. Not soon after, Forrest nails another, and another! Before the sun could even wipe out the eye, ‘trout whisperer “himself had three quotes before I landed a fish.

3 quotation of the day. 24.25 “

While Joe was landing his biggest speckled trout of the year, I hooked into a nice schoolie striper. After which slowed fishing to a snail’s pace and that was all she wrote. All in all, we all caught nice stripers and speckled trout before we threw in the towel.

This was not about the number of fish we caught or the one who left, it was all about absorbing the many subtleties and tidbits of information from a man who will probably forgotten more than I ever know flats fish. Once thing is certain, I will always appreciate the paddler with the sleeves cut off, who took the time to help a new guy.

~ See you on the water!
