Landing tricks for those Winter walleye

happy to land during a day on the ice.
Anyone ice fishing walleye or other larger fish knows that the moment of truth comes when the fish at the bottom of the ice hole. Getting the nose of the fish in the hole may seem simple, but it’s amazing how often fish off at this precise moment.
What makes this situation even more frustrating fish is unbuckled before your eyes! A few years ago I got so frustrated about the loss of hard-won fish in the hole, I started my ice rigging rods with what I call a landing leader.
I rinse my ice fishing combo with 10 pound test monofilament Maxima Ultra Green, a line that is highly respected for having exceptional wear resistance. I then tie a small barrel swivel and attach a 36-inch leader of 15 pound test Maxima fluorocarbon line. These fluorocarbon leader serves several purposes. First, fluorocarbon is invisible in water making it the perfect terminal connectivity.
second, fluorocarbon is exceptionally durable. the sharp teeth of a pike or lake trout are not party premium fluorocarbon line also fluorocarbon can take a lot of abuse from the edges of the ice hole before it failed
most importantly.. the fluorocarbon leader gives me the leverage to muscle fish up into the hole when the. swivel comes the hole, I grab the leader with one hand and push the fish up into the hole. I can pull through more pressure on the fish on the leader and forcing the fish in the hole, I can pull the rod . If the fish head hits the top of the hole, the fluorocarbon leader is also heavy enough to pull the fish up quickly on the surface of the ice.
Another trick I often use to large fish while ice fishing land is two holes next to each other, but slightly overlapping cut. The figure eight shaped hole provides more space to land stubborn fish. It is clear that the cutting of oversized holes is more work, but it also ensures that hooked fish will be landed fish!
It’s the little things we do on the water fishing vessel nightmare turns into the fish story of a lifetime.
