20 of the best lakes to visit in Europe: readers & # 039; travel tips

Winning advice: Attersee, Austria

The most blue and clear of the lakes near Salzburg, you can jump to Attersee and enjoy a wonderful dip. Surrounded by the mountains there are numerous walks and hikes, pristine farms and the countryside. Apparently out of the tourist route, there are some of the tourist groups that are found in other lakes in the region. The many public swimming areas, such as Unterach am Attersee, provide food, water sports, shade, slides and shallow areas for children.

Marnemoende, Utrecht, The Netherlands

It is difficult to imagine being closer to nature than to sleep in a lake. We enjoyed a weekend staying on a basic camping raft but completely adequate for two. They provided us with a canoe, which is the only way to get to their bed for the night, and some basic camping equipment. Lake Marnemoende is beautiful and full of wildlife. There is a village within an hour's walk, but otherwise there is only peace and tranquility and the most impressive sunrises to wake up. We stayed at camping-raft.com and it cost us less than £ 150 for the weekend.

Until last week I had never heard of Lake Peruća. It is formed by a dam on the Cetina River as it plunges through the karstic landscape, its source forms an agate pond that attracts a small number of tourists. They come for peace, fresh air, clean water, excellent cycling and cycling, fishing, the virgin countryside and local culture. A new campsite on the shores of the lake has plots at € 15 per day. The nearest city, Vrlika, is dominated by a fortress.

The region of the lakes in Finland is more beautiful when you can not say where the lake ends and where the sky begins. Saimaa is the largest lake in the country, an intricate labyrinth of channels and basins that host thousands of islands, some of which make up the Linnansaari National Park, where, if you're lucky, you'll discover one of the few ringed seals left in the wild. This part of the world is a country house, where the Finns retire to relax. Eight of us rented a log cabin from Hugon Villas, complete with a lakeside sauna that ran on firewood, which we thought was an extravagance, but we soon discovered that in Finland they are as common as an indoor bathroom.

We camped right on the water's edge at Camping Sandbank after just meeting up and finding a place. This site on Lake Titisee (50 scenic minutes on the train from Freiburg) gave us everything we needed for a large family aquatic camp. The children spent hours on rowing tables near the coast and heading to the pontoons where they could jump and dive. The warm, calm water tempted me (a reluctant participant) to swim in the lake. My reward – an authentic slice of black forest cake.

Many centuries ago, crannogs were found, artificial islands built on lakes as defensive houses, throughout Scotland, Ireland and Wales. At Lake Llangorse, in Brecon Beacons, an observation platform that leads to a thatched-roof mobile home gives an impression of how these ancient people lived. The lake, surrounded by the Black Mountains, is the largest natural lake in South Wales and known for its populations of birds and fish. An easy walk takes you through a site of special scientific interest, beyond the skin of a bird. Sailing on the lake is popular and you can rent a boat.

Remote and incredibly beautiful, part of the Kinloch Hourn adventure is getting there. When you turn off the A87, 24 miles of one-way road leads to this extraordinary marine lake, where you can see otters, seals and jellyfish in the crystal clear waters, as well as a large number of waterfowl. The road is not for the faint of heart, but take it easy and you are likely to see deer by the side of the road and birds of prey on the rise. There is a small cafe and B & B (double £ 90, shack £ 775pw, kinlochhourn.com) that serves fruit cake and coffee, which is a lovely place to stay. There is a path along the lake with views of the surrounding mountains. Orchids and other wild flowers keep you company.

We love Llyn Geirionydd in North Wales, because you can swim, row, sail or walk around it. There is a lovely round trip to the neighboring lake, Crafnant, which has a cafeteria that serves delicious sandwiches and offers fishing. The holiday homes include Ty Newydd (for 7 people, from £ 118pn), right on the lake. In fact, the entire Gwydir forest is dotted with lakes.

Snowdonia is not just a land of mountains, but of wonderful lakes. Llyn Idwal is a beautiful, secluded lake backed by cliffs that rise towards the Devil's Kitchen, a crack high in the rocks above. Park in a parking lot at Ogwen Cottage on the A5, between Snowdon and Capel Curig, follow a lower trail around the lake and admire the steep landscape above. When the weather is fine, there is a difficult walk to the devil's kitchen, following a rocky path. Then you can climb up to Llyn and Cwm, a small tan at the top, which is more satisfying for the effort and sight than the lake, then return in a descent that hurts your knee with breathtaking views.

Chew Valley Lake is an idyllic place to walk, eat, fish or sail. Take your boots (or wellies on wet days) to take a scenic walk on one of the lake's nature trails: Grebe Trail or Bittern trail. If you feel hungry, a popular place to eat something is Salt & Malt, which offers award-winning food with spectacular views of the lake and the countryside. The fish and chips are fantastic! Chew Valley Lake is also a birder's paradise: there are six bird skins scattered around the lake and about 270 species in the area. This is a lake that few visitors to these parts seem to know. Buttermere, nearby, draws hikers on its perfect path through the lake, but Loweswater offers such a dazzling landscape, and you may not see another person as you ride the four-mile circuit around its shores. We enjoy watching Melbreak, which looks out over the lake, and we list what reminded us. We also loved jumping on the water on rope swings and seeing territorial swans defending their patch. The iconic Kirkstile Inn and a pint of Loweswater Gold wait at the top of the lake.

Next to Lake Bassenthwaite, just outside Keswick on the A591 to Carlisle, you will find the beautiful house and gardens in Mirehouse (entrance to the garden for £ 4, £ 8.50 including the house, average price for children, children under 4 years free ). The Lakeside Walk offers adventure playgrounds in the woods, an outdoor theater erected by The Tennyson Society, lambs in spring and a walled garden of bees with an abundance of colorful and scented flowers. Take a small detour to the pre-Norman St Bega church. The parking lot is located in Dodd Wood, where there is an excellent tearoom (sticky ginger pudding!), Toilets and observation platforms for osprey.

On the southern outskirts of Athens, in the area known as the Athens Riviera, Lake Vouliagmeni is an unexpected discovery, within walking distance of the bustle of the city. It is a lake of natural origin, fed by the sea and the sea, which is seen locally as a spa destination, with warm sulphurous waters rich in minerals that are considered therapeutic. It is equally attractive for those who want to swim or dive in tranquil natural waters, the imposing rocky environment offers small niches to explore. Facilities include lockers, a playground, sun loungers and a cafe / restaurant. Located near the beach, you can reach the lake by public transport (metro, tram or bus) or by taxi (around € 20).

It is probably not a great place to swim, but the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon in southeastern Iceland offers boat trips among the icebergs that float in its waters. The best photographic opportunities occur when the weather is bad: the more cloudy the skies are, the bluer the icebergs appear. Boat tour, visit the aptly named Diamond Beach, where the lagoon flows into the sea. The black sands are dotted with transparent pieces of ice that have been carved by nature in abstract forms: an ever-changing gallery of outdoor sculptures.

This wonderful lake stretches along the border between northern Macedonia and Albania. Sit in Ohrid (on the Macedonian side of the north) to enjoy the walks through the old town with its interesting churches, and take a boat ride to the monastery of St. Naum, located in beautiful grounds with peacocks roaming. At night, sit on the shore of the lake in Ohrid with a drink or a meal (at a very reasonable price), contemplating the landscape and observing the swans in the lake. It's easier to get there than you might think: Wizzair flies from Luton directly to the small tourist town of Ohrid.

I love La Grange Fleurie, a renovated barn in Gourdon-Murat, about an hour's drive southeast of Limoges. It has two small lakes on its doorstep: Viam, small and quiet; and Lake Barriousses, larger, with activities for everyone, there is even an area for dogs. You can sit in the shade on the grass bench or worship the sun on its immaculate white sand beach. For the more active, there are canoes, pedalos, petanque and badminton. A bouncy castle in the water keeps the children occupied. The lake itself has a sandy bottom and is a pristine deep blue surrounded by beech and pine trees. There are also restaurants, of course.

The lakes of the Mercantour National Park in France are truly wonderful. A stone's throw from Nice and accessible through stunning walks through alpine pastures filled with wild flowers, you will have many options in this paradise for shepherds. However, my highlight should be Lac d'Allos (in the image above), the largest natural mountain lake in Europe and the jewel of the Alto Verdon. Nestled between the imposing Mont Pelat (3,052 meters) to the north and the trio of peaks known as Les Tours du Lac to the south, the gleaming cerulean waters of the Allos Lake are a feature of all the spectacular glacial lakes in the park. Forget the Cote d'Azur and head to Les Lacs d'Azur.

We stayed in a large house on the shores of Lake Nedre Noren, in Norhyttan, Dalarna County, in the center of the country. The garden includes a large terrace with beautiful views over the water, the farms and the forest. The bed of the lake, which has a soft shelf, is safe for young children to swim. Clean water heats up quickly in hot climates. Nearby is an isolated herb bathing place with a mini-beach. There is a boat to fish, see beavers, deer, elk, owls, cranes, red squirrels and lynxes. You can windsurf to two other linked lakes. There are numerous bathing places in other nearby lakes. Windsurf or ski, skate and snow-cat in winter.

Lake Caumasee is known as the Jewel of Flims … no filters are needed to capture its iridescent turquoise depths. The farmers used to take their cows to heal in these waters when my great-grandparents lived there, and I return from time to time for their cooling, healing and breathing properties for the pure air of the Swiss mountains. Walk through the pine forest from Haus Am Waldrand, a less traveled road, to reach the lake and find a quiet place to sit and read, or swim around the island. At the end of August / beginning of September it is quieter. The entrance fee to the lake is around £ 12 adults / £ 6 children between 6 and 16 years old.

If you are hiking to the Julian Alps, make the last stop of Komna Hut (€ 23-27 per night). From there, you can see Lake Bohinj shining in the distance. The descent is a simple zigzag (around 12 km), passing through the Savica waterfall, full of hikers from nearby Lake Bled. Continue, and you will be rewarded with a perfect expanse of images of calm and clear waters of blue-green color, with alpine mountains as a backdrop. The lake is big enough to find a small cove just for you (especially in the morning), rent a kayak, swim alone, spend time with campers or watch trout banks from the picturesque Ribčev Laz bridge. Motorized boats are prohibited.
