Hard Core Series Finale
Last Saturday I fished the final of the hard core Kayak Anglers Tournament with some fishermen from the Tampa Bay area.
I just catch catching a nice fish snook hardest of the three species that is needed would be slam. With this in mind I hit the water at 6:30 to find a line sider. While on the water I was fishing next to Mike Torrregrosa. We both landed a few small snook and continued to fish the deep drop-offs along the coastline. A few casts later DOA paddle tail Mike’s inhaled by what seemed like a very nice fish. Snook made some nice runs and finally showed itself after a few minutes Mike had a 35.25 “beauty on his measuring board to take a few pictures of the event. This snook was the second biggest he’s ever caught, and the better he got on tournament day.
With its long nose into the bag on Mike T went looking for his redfish and trout. I continued to fish and landed a total of 7 Snook with the largest being 27.6 inches. With time running out, I made the decision to go to the flats.
Once on the flats, it did not take long to find redfish and trout, unfortunately they were small. I moved to a different area where I often find redfish on the rising tides. Again most of the reds I found were rats, with the largest being 19.5 inches.
At this point I only had an hour and a half to get back to the road and began to worry that I would not make it back in time. With just 2 miles to get back to the launch, I began my way back stairs. One of the things I like about my Hobie Revo 13 is that I can move at the same time and fish. When I was halfway back to the launch, I hooked a trout 17.1 inches. I snapped a quick pic and was making my way toward the launch.
All my fish came for the day from the DOA Gold and Glow paddle tail rigged on a jighead owner inshore
Fortunately, I have to save it back to the road with a couple of minutes.
Mike T took 1 st place with a 74.25-inch slam
Chuck Statham took 2 nd place with a 74-inch slam
I took 3 rd with a 64.2 “slam.
At the end of the six events, Rick Taylor took the title of Hard Core Kayak Angler of the Year, I came in second place barely beating Peter Polleti who came in third.
Russ Inkjet won an Aqua Bound Manta Ray Hybrid paddle for the biggest snook
Ron Henderson won a Salty Shores BLAF shirt for the biggest redfish
