is just off Highway 101 and a short drive east of Chapleau, Ontario wait Ivanhoe Lake. Ivanhoe Lake has a rich history sport fishing and is known by the locals for a "walleye factory" bulging at banks with eating fish and medium enterprises. What even the locals do not fully understand is Lake Ivanhoe also produces staggering numbers of trophy class walleye.

Every spring when the walleye run the Ivanhoe River to spawn, happiness fishermen standing face to face with class trophy walleye. However, after the spring spawning run those big walleye seemingly evaporate.

Last August I was invited Ivanhoe Lake fish as host Garry Litt, owner of Red Pine Lodge, near Foleyet, Ontario. In visiting with Garry, I discovered that not only Ivanhoe Lake has a large population of walleye, it is also known for producing lake whitefish.

The second I learned Ivanhoe Lake produces coarse, I knew it was more likely to produce ciscoes and could support an overlooked open water trolling bite for trophy walleye. The biologist in me knows that lake whitefish which also tend to support other soft rays fish known as ciscoes. Both young ciscoes and whitefish are a favorite forage of open water walleye, because these bait fish not hard spines and scales that are difficult to digest for walleye provided.

Normally these open water trolling bites start to set up in the mid to late summer, when forage fish form large schools and to suspend the water column above the deeper parts of the lake. Warm summer weather causes the lake to stratify and establish the tires cooler water in the middle of the water column. Forage fish tend to these cooler bands of water and walleye favor to suspend right along with them.

The walleye roam in the middle of the lake following schools ciscoe and whitefish are not the run of the mill fish. This "open water" walleye tend to be adult fish that have adapted to feeding the larger and more protein-rich animal feed. Walleye can be found be expected after the roaming schools ciscoes all summer long and well into the fall.

Because the bait and walleye are constantly moving, trolling is one of the only practical ways to target these fish. Deep diving crankbaits are the logical choice because these lures can be easily manipulated to achieve virtually any desired depth by simply cable length they fished on adjusting.
Second, crankbaits easily adaptable to be taken in combination with an in-line planer boards, such as the famous Off Shore Tackle Side Planer. Using planer boards and plugs fishermen can easily target certain levels of depth in the water column and reach at the same time away from the boat to cover more water.

way to fish multiple lines while trying to pattern open water walleye.

The most productive plugs walleye trolling for open water tend to be deep diving minnow baits including the famous Reef Runner 800 series, Rapala Tail Dancer TDD11, Rapala & # 39; s Deep Husky Jerk 12 Bomber & # 39; s 25A and Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnow Deep. All these lures are similar in that the shape of the body is long and narrow, closely simulating open water forage species and they have considerable diving lip that makes it possible to fish these baits a fall of 20 feet or more.

On my trip Ivanhoe Lake was the Reef Runner 800 series that proved to be the most productive crankbait. back 150-200 feet fished on 10 # test monofilament, this bait is 25 to 28 feet down. For a full dive curve which shows exactly how deep the Reef Runner 800 Series runs on all lead lengths, check out the Precision Trolling Date, iPhone app, www.precisiontrollingdata.com. This app is sold through the Apple Store offers diving depths of more than 200 popular plugs. The same information is also available in a paper version known as Precision Trolling data Stickers printed on vinyl and can be easily maintained 3700 style tackle boxes.

The key to the open water suspended walleye catch is to find them first. I recommend identifying the deeper parts of the lake by using a printed map or mapping of data on a combination sonar / GPS unit. Typical forage fish accumulate in water from 30 to 50 feet deep over vast plains and these bait fish tend to suspend about halfway into the water column. With the help of sonar, it is quite easy to locate schools of bait and also to any walleye that are shadowing the bait highlight schools.

Do not bother to draw lines or even start fishing until both bait and walleye are found using sonar. It is common in Ontario waters for both walleye and pike to suspend in the same areas as they recognize both the value of the feed on protein-rich fodder. Besides the big walleye, Ivanhoe Lake is home to some impressive pike and both will be caught trolling plugs into open water.

Fish with four people and in which two plugs and two planer boards on each side of the boat is a good starting point. With the help of four lines in the water, the process may be of the sort by means of different make, model, and to start the color of the plugs.

On any given day the depth at which the walleye will be suspended subject to change. It is also important to note that the temptations that favor walleye can not only change day by day, sometimes hour by hour.

The walleye on crankbaits process of catching open water comes down to the willingness to continue experimenting with lures, lead lengths, trolling speeds and lure color is clearly a productive combination. Once this pattern begins to become apparent, smart trawlers duplicate the productive variables as possible.

One last tip is to consider using Tattle Flag kits on the planer boards. Tattle Flags are springing flag kits that enable the flag on the board to fold down when a fish bites and was hooked. This simple feature makes it much easier for the planer board to determine strikes and tips from the fishermen when a small fish is hooked or even read floating debris like a piece of weed fouls on the plug.
Tattle Flag kits are selecting an aftermarket item on Off Shore board can be installed in about two or three minutes with only a Phillips screwdriver.
